How we do IT
The era of DIY and set-and-forget computing is gone. This is the age of facing your dependence on technology head-on by understanding the risks that pose a threat to your business, and putting in place the tools, people and policies to mitigate that risk. A smooth running computing environment is one that is designed well and thoroughly maintained.
Long term reliability requires proactive maintenance, 24/7 monitoring/alerting, tight security and fast response and resolution from skilled engineers. Workstations and servers are fluid environments consisting of millions of lines of evolving code, constantly changing as features and patches are released and installed. Without proper management, problems will quickly consume even the most robustly designed network. Consistent proactive maintenance and swift, experienced response to problems is the key to keeping your people productive and protecting your investment in IT.
We start by monitoring and receiving alerts for every single workstation and server in a customer’s network. Whether it’s predictive alerts about hard drive failure, or notifications that Windows patches or virus definitions are failing to update for some reason, these are just a few examples of things we can detect and resolve before they ever become serious downtime for you. It’s true that nothing is perfect, and things like servers and Internet connections will occasionally have problems, but our policy is that we’re alerted to them, working on them, and calling you with an update before you ever pick up the phone.
Assuming a robust and redundant hardware infrastructure are in place, security problems pose the biggest risk to uptime, productivity, and regulatory compliance. At the very best, a malware infection is a mild nuisance and causes minor performance problems. At its worst, however, and what we have seen more and more of lately, is that it can bring your business to an immediate and complete halt. The advent of ransomware is truly scary. A simple executable one of your users unknowingly downloads from a usually trusted site that’s become compromised will silently crawl your network, encrypting every single file it finds, leaving behind only instructions on how much and where to send money to get the key you’ll need to decrypt all your data. All this is not to mention the seemingly incessant stream of hacked networks or possibility of a disgruntled employee causing significant harm to your data on their way out the door.
There is absolutely no substitute for a rigorous and comprehensive approach to security. It starts with fully managed antivirus/anti-malware software, extends to a robust and tightly monitored firewall, and goes all the way to the policies, procedures, and acceptable use guidelines you adopt and communicate to your employees.
